Swansea water project

Welcome to the Swansea water project page

The Swansea Water Project is an $8.5 million project resulting from an agreement between the State Government of Tasmania, Glamorgan Spring Bay Council and Hobart Water to provide Swansea with high quality, potable drinking water by the summer of 2009/10.

To achieve this, Hobart Water is dedicating a Project Team to construct a 400ML storage dam, build new pipelines and a treatment plant to treat water to Australian Drinking Water Guideline standards.

This project provides numerous benefits to the Glamorgan Spring Bay municipality, directly benefiting approximately 650 Swansea houses and businesses through removing the boil alert status. This in turn will support tourism and future economic development.

This page will be updated as new information emerges. If you wish to provide feedback on the project, please feel free to email swanseawaterproject@hobartwater.com.au

March 2009

We are pleased to report that the tenders for the main infrastructure components have been awarded and construction has now started. The Primary contractor for the dam and pipelines has been awarded to Shaw Contracting Pty Ltd.  The contractor for the water treatment plant has been awarded to Aquagenics Pty Ltd.   Tenders for minor associated works including the Swan River Pump upgrade, pump for the Meredith River and the existing Cathcart Street Reservoir roofing are closing in March 2009.  Project completion is due late 2009, or earlier all things going well

January 2009

We are pleased to report that Hobart Water has received approval for it’s development applications lodged late last year. Outstanding statutory approvals include the Assessment Committee for Dam Construction (ACDC) and the Aboriginal Heritage Permit. Tenders for all major components including the water treatment plant, pipelines and dam are now closed and currently being evaluated by Hobart Water with contracts expected to be finalised by late January.

Community Open Days were held in Orford and Bicheno in November 2008 presenting a valuable time to meet with various community members. More Open Days will be scheduled across the Glamorgan Spring Bay municipality in 2009. Look out for advertising closer to the event time.

October 2008

We are pleased to announce the development application for the project will be submitted to Council in the week ending 7 November 2008. Both the dam application and the water licence for Meredith River have also been submitted. The Department of Primary Industries and Water are also processing the transfer of the water licence for the Swan River from Glamorgan Spring Bay Council to Hobart Water.

Earlier this month a Community Leader Briefing and Community Information Session were held in Swansea. Both sessions provided a great opportunity to introduce members of the team, meet some of the residents, business owners and ratepayers and share information on the project. Regular Community Leader Briefings have been scheduled across the Glamorgan Spring Bay municipality, look out for advertising closer to the event time.
