Water quality

Water is a naturally produced element which contains organic matter. Drunk straight from the environment, it may contain sediment, bacteria, metals such as aluminium and any matter which seeps or falls into the water.

Before water can be safely drunk, it must be treated to remove anything which has the potential to harm people, especially children and the elderly.

The water which is sourced from the DerwentRiver runs through a treatment plant, which filters and chlorinates the water. Water from Mt Wellington and Lake Fenton is also chlorinated.

The quality of water must meet both the Australian Government's Drinking Water Guidelines and the State Government's Guidelines. When monitoring or tests indicate the water does not meet the required guidelines, action is immediately taken to rectify the situation.
