Our Organisation
Hobart Water was formed in 1997 when the Tasmanian State Government transferred ownership and management of the previous Metropolitan Regional Water Board to the eight major local councils in and around Hobart.
Hobart Water's Joint Authority
The organisation is governed by a Joint Authority which comprises one elected representative from each owner Council. The Joint Authority, which is governed by the Local Government Act, establishes the directions and policies of Hobart Water.
In their role as Hobart Water's shareholders, these councils are responsible for determining the organisation's strategic direction. The councils that comprise the Joint Authority are:
- Brighton Council
- Clarence City Council
- Derwent Valley Council
- Glenorchy City Council
- Hobart City Council
- Kingborough Council
- Sorell Council
- Southern Midlands Council

Hobart Water's Board of Management
In addition to the Joint Authority, a Board of Management comprising experienced business people ensures that the Joint Authority's directions are translated into robust strategic business goals to guide the organisation's human resources, fiscal management, environmental care and the reliable, long-term supply of clean drinking water to the city.
