Our History

The site of Hobart Town in the early 1800's was largely selected because of the presence of fresh water. Although the town's first settlers tried to establish their base at Risdon Cove on the eastern shore, the lack of a reliable water supply drove the settlers across the Derwent River to the present-day site of Hobart city.

The Hobart Rivulet - the town's lifeblood - was quickly overcome by a burgeoning population. Within a few decades, it became an open sewer, creating the urgent need for a cleaner and more reliable drinking water supply. This led to the development of reservoirs and pipelines which continue to supply Hobart to this day. Hobart Water acts as custodian to a significant amount of this historical infrastructure.

With a history spanning over 100 years, Hobart Water has compiled its historical documents, photos and stories to create a history book.

'The Water-getters' documents the story of Hobart Water in the community and covers the history of the catchment areas including Mt Wellington, Lake Fenton and the River Derwent. Anecdotes from past employees are shared throughout the book as well as the many stories and scandals throughout the development of Hobart's water system.
