Derwent Estuary Program
The Derwent Estuary Program (DEP) is a regional partnership between local governments, the Tasmanian State Government, commercial and industrial enterprises, and community-based groups to restore and promote our estuary.
The DEP was established in 1999 and has been nationally recognised for excellence in coordinating initiatives to reduce water pollution, conserve habitats and species, monitor river health and promote greater use and enjoyment of the foreshore.
Hobart Water is a major sponsor of the program. Hobart Water personnel work closely with the Derwent Estuary Program at policy, communications and on-the-ground levels. Hobart Water provides the Program with regular monitoring data and supply extra samples in order for the group to monitor the quality of the Derwent.
The Derwent Estuary Program runs a range of projects aimed at restoring and promoting the Derwent estuary. Projects focus on five central themes – managing human pressures, protecting ecosystems, conserving cultural heritage, enhancing human uses, and promoting understanding, awareness and participation.
