Environment

Hobart Water operates in a range of unique, diverse and important regions within southern Tasmania. Many of these areas are highly valued for environmental, aesthetic, cultural, heritage or recreational reasons. We are committed to ensuring we care for the environment and comply with all environmental legislation to ensure sustainability for future Tasmanian generations.

Tasmanian Environment

Tasmania is renowned for its magnificent natural environment which supplies a city with high quality source water. While Hobart Water is fortunate to operate in such remarkable natural areas, inherent in our work is the responsibility of acting as custodian.

Hobart Water is committed to undertaking its business in an environmentally sound and socially responsible manner. To meet this commitment, the organisation has developed a certified Environmental Management System which provides guidance and processes for managing environmental issues encountered during the course of its operations.

In addition to our own activities, special Government-enacted regulations in Mt Wellington Park have created drinking water catchment zones to protect these source water areas around water sources. These zones ensure that activities which may negatively affect water quality are restricted.

For this reason, recreational visitors to the Mount Wellington area and to Hobart's reservoirs will find that activities such as dog walking, horse riding and trail bike riding are contained to certain areas only and contact with the water is generally not permitted. This ensures the water's integrity is maintained for home use.
