Visiting the Park

All visitors to Risdon Brook Park are encouraged to help protect the pristine conditions around the dam as well as the drinking water stored within it. This will help ensure your safety and protect the quality of the drinking water in the reservoir.

Opening Hours

Risdon Brook Park is open from 7.30am - 4.30pm during non-daylight savings times and 7.30am - 9.00pm during daylight savings.

If you are visiting, please ensure you leave the Park prior to the closing time as the front gate is locked promptly.

Closing the park

In extreme weather conditions Hobart Water closes the park to ensure the safety of both the general public and our staff. If members of the public have a barbecue booking on a day in which the park is closed due to extreme weather, then all fees are refunded and the group is given a free booking at a later date.

Should the park be closed unexpectedly, some local alternative walks include:

Shag Bay Heritage Walk

  • 2 minutes drive from Risdon Brook Park
  • 45 minute return walk to Shag Bay, approx 3km return

This walk is well sign posted, with directional and heritage signs throughout. A mostly flat walk but slightly undulating at the start with a short but fairly steep decent to Shag Bay at the end.

ANZAC Park to Tasman Bridge

  • 7 minute drive from Risdon Brook Park
  • 50 minute walk, 3.5km one way

Walk from ANZAC Park around the Lindisfarne foreshore to the Tasman Bridge. This walk is mostly flat.

Group Visits

Large groups and schools visiting the park are required to book their visit to ensure safety and convenience measures can be put in place. Please contact Hobart Water on 6233 6533 in advance.

Conditions of entry

There are four basic conditions of entry when visiting Risdon Brook Park. These include:

  1. In the interest of your safety please do not swim in the reservoir. Not only is it potentially harmful, but can also lead to contamination of the drinking water.
  2. Always use the toilet facilities available at the car park. There are no facilities along the reservoir track.
  3. No animals are to be brought into Risdon Brook Park. Family pets near the reservoir significantly increase the risk of drinking water contamination. They may also impact on local wildlife.
  4. Please ensure you place all rubbish in the bins provided and do not drop any rubbish along the dam track.
