Water services
Hobart Water provides water to various customers throughout Southern Tasmania. These include bulk water, off-peak and wayside.
Bulk Water
Hobart Water's core business is to provide bulk drinking water to our eight owner councils in Southern Tasmania. These eight councils are both our owners and customers:
- Brighton Council
- Clarence City Council
- Derwent Valley Council
- Glenorchy City Council
- Hobart City Council
- Kingborough Council
- Sorell Council
- Southern Midlands Council
Hobart Water's role is to monitor and help protect drinking water catchment areas, collect and treat water and pipe it to storages located around the city. From our storage reservoirs, water is piped to numerous council storages, which is then reticulated to residents. Depending on the council region, water may have originated from Mount Wellington, the Derwent River or Lake Fenton.
Local councils then take water from these reservoirs and pipe it throughout their municipalities. If you are a resident and want to find out where your water comes from, visit Your Area.
Hobart Water and Councils ensure the water meets the Australian Drinking Water Quality Guideline standards. Our Council customers ensure the safe storage and delivery of water to their municipalities, once delivered by Hobart Water.
Off-peak Water
Off-peak water is water available to irrigators during periods of low demand, or when spare capacity is available, typically during winter and early spring. Taking this water into storage during this time allows better preparation for our customers for the dryer months of the year.
Hobart Water supplies off-peak water to around 60 customers in the Tea Tree/Coal River Valley region. These customers are supplied both directly from our bulk supply pipelines and through Council reticulation systems.

Wayside connections
Wayside connections is when water is directly supplied from Hobart Water's main lines because due to location of some homes, servicing from their local council is not possible. To learn more about wayside supply, click here
