Water Customers

Hobart Water has an array of water customers based on the type of supply they receive. The three main types of customer are bulk water, off-peak and wayside customers.

Bulk water customers

Hobart Water's bulk water customers include eight council owners. Once water is piped to council storages, Councils reticulate the water to local homes and businesses.

Off-peak water customers

Off-peak customers are predominantly irrigators and commercial operators who receive water from Hobart Water in seasonal 'off-peak' periods. This water is generally purchased during winter, when there is additional water available for storage in private dams by off-peak customers.

Are you eligible to become an off-peak customer?

Off-peak water supply is governed by our Off-peak Water Supply Policy (link to policy). The main conditions that apply for the supply of off-peak water include:

  • Off-peak water will only be available if Hobart Water's commitment to supply our Council Customers has been met,
  • Water that is supplied must be taken into storage, and this storage must be adequate for your requirements, and
  • Hobart Water cannot guarantee the supply of off-peak water at any time, particularly during the summer months.

All off-peak connections are subject to an off-peak supply agreement between the consumer and Hobart Water. If you would like to enquire about becoming an off-peak customer, contact us.

Wayside Customers

Wayside customers are serviced with water directly from Hobart Water because their homes cannot be serviced with water from their local council due to location. Wayside customers are usually located along Hobart Water's main pipelines. The ability of Hobart Water to create a new connection is dependant on the current capacity in the pipeline and feasibility.

Are you eligible to become a Wayside customer?

New waysider connections are dependant on the location of the applicant's property, the availability of surplus water, and the feasibility of a new connection with the final decision at the discretion of Hobart Water.
